House Hunting: Dont Forget to Consider These Features

House Hunting: Don't Forget to Consider These Features

As you're looking at the prospects for a new house, you probably have many criteria in mind. You likely know how many bedrooms and bathrooms you want, and you're probably thinking about the size of the home and property. While these elements are certainly important, don't forget about the other features that can make your dwelling a space that you love.

Sliding Glass Doors

Many houses have doors off of the kitchen that lead into the backyard, which makes the process easier when you're entertaining guests outside. As you're looking at houses, you should think about whether or not you want sliding glass doors. Some prefer the aesthetic quality of these doors, and others worry that they could pose safety or privacy concerns.

Swimming Pools

The ability to walk out the door and dive into a pool is a joy that some people want to have in their new homes. On the other hand, you may not want to deal with the maintenance of the pool or having to worry about an accident occurring. In the event that you do want a pool, you should take into account whether you wish to have an in-ground or above-ground style.

Fireplaces

When checking out potential houses, you may wish to only look at ones that have a fireplace next to which you can snuggle up on cold winter days. It's also possible that you would prefer to not have a fireplace and to use the extra space otherwise. This feature is another one that can help you to narrow down the many options.

Legal Apartment

Even if you need plenty of room in the house now, a day may come when you wish to rent out part of the space. A house that has a legal apartment in it can help you to bring in extra income too. Also, when your kids are older, they may want to live in this space. It's also possible that you never want to be a landlord and would prefer to look at homes that don't even have this option.

Electrical System

You might assume that no problems exist if the lights turn on when you want them to; however, serious electrical dangers can lurk behind the walls. Opting for a house with upgraded electric is a smart decision. In the event that you find a house with an older electrical system, find out what it will cost to upgrade it before you agree to any sales.

Security System

You may want to have your current security company install a system when you move into the house, or you may wish to purchase a home that already has one in place. It's also possible that you are not interested in a security system and would prefer to buy a house that doesn't have a system that you would need to take out.

New Bathrooms and Kitchens

As you are browsing through pictures online, you may be intrigued by the aesthetic quality of brand new kitchens and bathrooms. Still though, as you see the price tags attached, you may decide that you will just have this work taken care of later on. Do keep in mind that kitchen and bathroom renovations can cost a decent amount of money and take quite some time; you may even need to move out of your home while the work is completed. Consider both sides of this element.
