Planning Your Home’s Colours
Saturday, 31 March 2018, 03:05:00 PM

When decorating your home, it is always important for you to think about what kind of visual effect you want to create in each room's personal environment. Not all colours will establish the same effect, and understanding how to employ colour psychology successfully can allow you to have a much more grounded and pronounced effect in your home. Purchase furniture according to your needs and be sure to keep a few of these basic tips in mind when you are ready to start experimenting with different colours in your home.

Always Start Slow and Small

We all respond to colour in our day-to-day life. When we see certain combinations or certain canvases in a room, we feel a certain way, and many colours are chosen to create a specific response in our minds. If you want to establish a unique feeling in your home, take the time to experiment on a smaller scale. Working with bathrooms, small halls, and any other smaller area in the home can be one of the best ways for you to get started with different colour combinations. Not only do you have more room for experimentation and error, but corrections are often easier to implement as well, because of the general scale of the location.Planning Your Home’s Colours

Plan for the Room's Mood

This is one of the most important ways to begin. When you choose the right colour for a room, it is important to think about the mood that the colour will establish. There is no single right answer for what kind of atmosphere you want to establish. The bedroom, for example, may benefit in equal parts from a primarily restful and soothing colour scheme or a more passionate and dramatic colour scheme. The tones that you choose will have the most to say about the environment in which they are set, so never be afraid to play around with what type of message you want to send out. Neutral and cool tones always create a more soothing effect, while brighter, sunnier colours can be just what you need to make a more powerful statement.

Implement Lighting Changes

Though choosing a good colour is paramount to the success of the atmosphere, it is always a good idea to think about working with the lighting in the area as well. Many paint stores have a light box that allows you to test out the paint chips in different types of light settings before you take them home. Natural daylight helps bring out the truest hues in your chosen palette, while both incandescent lighting and fluorescent lighting can adjust the colour spectrum more towards the cool or the warm. Playing around with these effects can be one of the best ways for you to focus energy better on the colours themselves.

Create Plenty of Contrast

As you get more comfortable with your colour choices, you will be ready to make bolder sweeps into colour combinations. Though matching tones and themes is always in style, it can be just as good of an idea for you to experiment with clashing colour as well. Reds and blues, blacks and whites, oranges and purples, colours that stand out sharply against each other are able to draw more attention to each component. This makes them ideal for setting up a focal area in the room or hallway. Play around with such colour combinations and see how you can establish an environment unique to your home. Be sure to factor in the effect that local lighting and shadows will have on the colours as well for the most thorough decorating experience.
